Copper Cables
Cabling is the longest life cycle component of the entire network, outlived only by the building. All too often, organizations fail to identify the importance of the structured cabling system they install and do not allow for future expansion.
Category
levels
One thing to note with unshielded twisted pair Cabling is
what we call Cat or Category levels. These are different
qualities and allow for different speeds for data transfer.
There are six different cat levels. (The important ones
are cat – 5/5e and 6)
- Cat
1 – POTS (Plane Old Telephone Service) this is just
regular phone line.
- Cat
2 – 4 Mbps
- Cat
3 – 16 Mbps
- Cat
4 – 20 Mbps
- Cat
5/5e – 100 Mbps, 1 Gbps
- Cat
6 – 1 Gbps, 10 Gbps
