Fiber Optic
Although
it’s been around for a very long time, it use to be
used for the most high-end servers. Today we are seeing
it more and more in office environments.
The
actual fiber optic is very thin, it has cladding around
it and that’s what the light reflects off on the inside
when its running down the wire, around that is Kevlar surrounded
by a protective coating. There are really only two types
of fiber optic cabling that you will run into, single mode
and multimode.
SINGLE
MODE– This uses laser light to actually transfer the
data and is designed to go for incredibly long distances,
it can go tens of kilometers depending on how the system
is designed. It’s rare, expensive and very weird.
MULTIMODE
– This uses a light emitting diode (LED) to send the
data and nine times out of ten when you find a fiber optic
system it will be multimode.
